Natural Selection by Christine Taylor

‘Natural Selection’ is a series of 20” x 30” digital landscape photographs shot around the U.S. over a period of two years. They incorporate the aesthetic of tableau images while simultaneously moving away from technical photography and embracing an observational approach based on instinct. Each image strips away formalities and embraces the documentary, capturing real moments of found scenes in community that represent a place and identity among the American landscape. The brief periods seen in each frame attempt to question a moment of indefinite truth – revealing ambiguous relationships between humans, their environment, and a time in between chaos where the definition of what is happening is indefinite. Together they represent the inevitable intimacy and dependency between the inanimate and the living.
